Time is limited, as we all know. It is the one thing that we can never get back and that makes it our most precious resource. In terms of business, everyone wishes that they had more time. We constantly think, “Oh, how my business would grow if I only had a little more time in the day!”
You may not be able to magically create more time, but there are things you can do to save time. In fact, most time saving tips are actually rather simple. These few time saving tips for business owners will help you save the extra time that you need to grow your business, instead of just running it.
Set Goals & Create a Plan
One of the most important time saving tips is to set your goals. If you want to be successful and more productive, then you need to know what you are reaching for. You will end up wasting time if your tasks are not centered around your goal or worse, if you don’t know what your goals actually are.
Once you know what your goals are, then you need to create a step-by-step plan on how to get there. Creating this plan will save you time because you will know exactly what your next step is. You won’t have to figure it out in the spur of the moment.
Prioritize Your Tasks
Let’s be honest, as a business owner, you likely have several tasks, projects, and deadlines that you need to meet. While that is the nature of the position, it is still impossible for you to get all of your tasks completed everyday. You will need to prioritize your tasks.
First, decide what tasks are the most important. Then decide which tasks have closer deadlines. Based on those two factors, you will then know what projects to work on first. This saves time because you won’t have to decide what task to work on after every single project.
This may not be a time saving tip per say, but it is important to remember when you are planning out your day. You have to be realistic about your goals. When creating your to-do list for the day, remember your limitations. Don’t plan on completing more than you know you actually can. Otherwise, you will find yourself stressed out and unable to complete the tasks you normally would.
Take Short Breaks
This may seem contrary but actually taking breaks is a great way to save time. Everyone needs breaks and taking a break can actually improve your productivity. In a 2014 study, it was determined that workers who took 17 minutes of break time for every 52 minutes worked were in the top 10% of performers. This is because taking breaks helps improve focus and lets you work faster. The quicker you can work effectively, the more time you save.
This can be one of the hardest time saving tips out there to follow, but you need to do it anyway. You have to learn how to say no. People will always come to you and ask you to do a favor, take on a project, or any other number of things. If you have time available, then go for it. However, if you don’t have time or it will be damaging to your business, then politely say no. You can’t afford to waste time on other people’s projects when you have plenty of your own.
Eliminate the Unnecessary
Chances are high that you have several unnecessary tasks on your to-do list right now. It’s also likely that you don’t even know what they are. One of the best things you can do for your business is determine which tasks help your business out the most. Spend 80% of your time on the most important tasks, 20% on the necessary but not critical tasks, and just stop doing the non-essential tasks. By getting rid of those unnecessary projects, you will have more time to put into the ones that actually help your business grow.
Managing your time can be hard, especially as a business owner or prospective business owner. These time saving tips will help you get off on a good start. Use them and start reinvesting your time back into your business the right way. Before long, that saved/reinvested time will help your business succeed more than you thought it could.
